Netherlands: Landelijke Opschoondag

To start a movement, you need to engage as many as possible. We are a partner in national campaigns for a cleaner and more sustainable environment. We contribute to the campaign by sharing our knowledge and network in the plastic chain and come up with creative ideas on how to get everyone involved and make it happen. With the marble tile municipalities reward their inhabitants for their contribution to a cleaner environment.

A good idea

This is a project we came up with ourselves. A good idea should be out there. This is why we started talking about it with our network.

What did we come up with

The marble tile! This is a fun and colorful item that can be placed on the schoolyard or in our neighbourhood. Kids and parents will see it every day and therefor it’s a long term reminder that recycling is useful: there’s lots you can make from recycled material! Don’t just throw it away: recycle and reuse.

These companies helped

Every year Stichting Nederland Schoon organises the ‘Landelijke Opschoondag’. The success of the Day of Sustainability (Dag van de Duurzaamheid 10 oktober 2016) inspired them to reward the Schoon Belonen municipalities for their clean up activities with the marble tile. Together we made it possible to produce 1500 tiles and convey the message in a positive manner that plastic waste is still valuable resource.

Plastic waste

Preferable for such a programme is to ask the neighborhood or a school to collect the lids/caps from plastic bottles to involve them and make everyone aware of plastic and the waste they collect in their households.

The process

From the schools, the lids are brought to a recycling company. They shred the lids and make it into a useful resource for our marble tile.

The reward

The marble tile is an excellent reward for neighborhoods with kids or for school. So everyone who keep their streets and householding clean, gets a colorful reward to play with.

Create awareness

The colorful spot on the schoolyard will trigger the kids to think back on their recycling programme. They’re reminded and see the fun of recycling and the value of their plastic waste.
